Sarah Burr—Financial Advisory Services Manager, Deloitte
As a member of BAP in 2014, I undertook a leadership role when I saw the value it was delivering for students. BAP as an international organisation helps to bridge the gap between students and professional organisations, and offers opportunities such as office tours, mock interviews, ask the expert panels and insight from those who have been in their shoes. I personally gained significant value meeting industry professionals, from the Big Four, to banking, and leading public sector agencies. Attending and leading BAP events helped me to determine the right career for me and set me up for success. It was an enabler for securing an internship position at Deloitte where, 5 years on, I am now a Financial Advisory Services manager. I was fortunate as a student to have the opportunity to connect with industry leaders through BAP initiatives and still maintain some of these relationships and industry connections to this day.

The benefits of joining BAP Wellington Chapter are substantial. As a former member it gave me and other members unparalleled access to major employers and networkers. Our “mock interviews” event became a staple of the recruitment round, and at one stage there was a waitlist of future employers wanting to buy a table there! BAP is a powerful brand here in New Zealand, and employers recognise that. They know that our members are intelligent, they know they are well-rounded, and the only part left for them is to assess whether our members are the right fit for their firm/company. This is the true value of BAP that no one else can compete with.
As a former President of the Chapter, I benefitted from being able to oversee the operations of BAP, managing some of our external relationships with corporate sponsors, employers, and internal relationships with other committee members. All of those committee members have gone on to do some quite spectacular things. Two have even married each other, and I was invited to the wedding! BAP helped to start me on my career. A career that has seen me work in large corporates, large firms, and now running a complex business with extensive land holdings assets to manage. I attribute it, in part, to my becoming a CFO at 26.

Over several years I have employed several Beta Alpha Psi members as interns. I always had confidence that a Beta Alpha Psi member would add value in their role and found the skills and capability each member brought to their role was impressive. During this time, I was also able to attend several development sessions run for members and have no doubt these prepared the members for the workplace both as interns and then once they started their careers
